SD cards are multifunctional because they are not only useful for expanding the storage capacity of cell phones, but also to protect the photos and videos captured by our cameras. In addition, It has also served as storage for console games such as Nintendo.

The storage they contain is variable and most companies in this industry have ensured that they are of very good quality.. But it's not always like this, many times making them work becomes a real nightmare, That's why we bring you some tricks that we hope will be very helpful with your SD card.

What should you check on your SD device?

First of all we must take into account the following indications:

Verify that your card is not write-protected

When we acquire an SD or micro SD card, we should check if your switch, located on the side of the device, not in protected mode or lock mode. This is usually the main reason why we cannot write or edit the files contained in the memory.

Check if there is enough space on the SD memory

When we insert the SD card in our equipment, we must verify inside the computer folder or My Computer, if the properties of the external device are not complete. If it is complete, this will prevent us from working on it or keep it write-protected.

In the same way we can see in the properties if it is in Reading Mode, located at the bottom of the window where it says Attributes.

What are the symptoms of a write protection?

Many of the cards like SD or SDHC come with a switch that can block their writing or whose switch has also become loose with the passage of time. Either of the two things that happens will cause that when entering it, the data it contains cannot be edited. Therefore, keep in mind the following symptoms to know later how to fix it.

And a virus

On other occasions it has happened that the external device such as the USB has a hidden virus and does not allow unlocking the permissions to access the card, That is why we recommend you to scan the memory before using it to verify that it does not come with faults., there are many reliable antivirus that you can download without problem.

change the adapter

This is a very common case where your SD card is blocking its writing due to SCHC adapter issue. So your solution is very simple., you just need to change it and the problem solved.

Current status of your USB device

Check your SD memory, because it usually happens that some pendrives need to be formatted before being able to use it and it hangs because that process has not been completed in its entirety.

Another case is memory failure, but this time the Flash of the device, resulting in an impediment to use your SD device. In this situation it is not recommended to continue using it, since their cycles are determined in terms of writing and therefore are difficult to fix.

We must take into account the quality of the device many times to avoid all these inconveniences. In the same way, you can carry out the following procedure to know for sure if your SD is having failures in its Flash memory:

  • First type in your search bar cmd, no capital letters.
  • Then you need to press the following keys at the same time, what are CTRL / SHIFT / INTRO, to be able to open the Team Manager.
  • Then we finish with the analysis of the device in order to correct errors, all of this is accomplished using the CHKDSK command.

Note: when the unit / F with which this analysis is carried out is being used in another process, it is best to disassemble that unit.

Solutions to disable write protection on SD device

fix write protection on SD

In this aspect we are going to point out the possible solutions or alternatives that you can use to unlock your SD card and be able to write to it safely.

1.Use the CMD

As we said before, we must go to a command that is present in your Windows system, to be able to disable write lock:

  • Type cmd in the search bar and press CTRL keys / SHIFT / ENTER.
  • Type the word DiskPart.
  • Then you need to type the command called List Disk and then press the Enter key. This is to show you which internal and external storage drives are connected to the computer.
  • Then, you must select the Disk Number option, taking into account that attributes whose disk does not correspond to it are not applied.
  • Then you must write the following link which is “Read-only clean disk attributes” and then hit Enter.
  • Finally, once all these steps are done, you must type Exit on your keyboard or exit what the DiskPart utility has been.
  • Close the Windows command and proceed to restart the computer.

2. Clean up your DiskPart drive

This method is based on cleaning which is your USB drive or device; also works with storage cards. Using another command available on your Windows computer, llamado Clear from DiskPart, you can unlock or remove protection, Besides that, frees up space on device because all hidden partitions disappear and also your MFT.

The steps to follow are as shown below:

  • We must start by opening our command prompt as we explained a while ago, then we must write the word DiskPart.
  • Once you have verified that the chosen disk is the one indicated, you must be very careful that we are not going to erase information from other disks that are there.
  • Next we will use another command called Clean All in order to delete not only what does not work on your disk but also those sectors that are located on the disk and that are zero.
  • And with this already when closing the system and restarting the computer you can use your SD.

One thing you need to know is to be aware of the status of your disk, specifically if you are offline or in offline mode. Then proceed to enable the disk by typing Online Disk and that's it.

3. Desactive la protección a través del Registry Editor present in Windows.

The procedure is not that complicated if you do it carefully as follows:

  • It should start by opening the start menu present on your computer.
  • Then you need to select Run and then type the word Regedit, pressing the Enter key.
  • Another method is the Windows keyboard shortcut; press + R, type the word Regedit in the same way and continue with Enter.
  • Once this is done, you will get a path to several folders from which you need to select the following pattern:

– HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

– System.

– Current control assembly.

– Control.

– Storage device policies.

  • This record will be saved within the list of files and then you must proceed to write Disablewp.bat, which will give the order to execute in batches in Windows.
  • Once all of the above is done, should be copied to the policies folder of the storage device. If you don't have the folder, you can create it yourself by using the right mouse button and selecting the Control folder and the option to create New Key.
  • Upon completion of this phase, We will look for the alternative called WriteProtect on the right side and we will click on it.
  • You should also change the value of the enabled hexadecimal to 1 and disable it by setting it in 0 (zero).
  • Disconnect your device from the computer and restart it, as the last step to finish this procedure.

Although it is a bit long and tedious most of the time, it works because the trick is to disable the hex value to remove the protection it comes with. However, if you can't solve the problem, we have other methods that can help you.

4. Disabling write protection by formatting the drive

This is a solution when the problem comes from the flash drive. Full formatting of the operating system must be accomplished for the device to boot up and return to its origin; Here's how to do it:

  • As a precaution, we recommend turning off the equipment.
  • Then connect the SD card to an available port or, failing that, to the pendrive you want to free.
  • Press the power button on your computer.
  • Once the screen turns on, press the F8 key on your keyboard, so that you can enter Windows advanced start menu.
  • Find the option that says Safe Mode on the system and open the already known cmd command.
  • Go to admin, anyway what we have commented in the first methods.
  • Then write the word Format X, which is equivalent to the drive and which can then be moved to a fully removable drive path.
  • Finally format once you have already typed the command.
  • And write protection will no longer exist.
  • Restart your computer again, this is another suggestion.

5. Modify the policy of what the local group is.

The policy editor that are present in Local Group on Windows system, gives us the possibility to control and modify those permissions to read and write the connected disks; either internal or external. We can achieve this alternative as follows:

  • You need to connect the external drive or SD card to the computer first.
  • Go to settings and make sure it is disabled or not configured.
  • Press the Windows key and at the same time the letter R, preceded by the word Gpedit.msc.
  • We will see a route that you must follow to the letter:

– Equipment configuration.

– Administrative Templates.

– System.

– Access to removable storage.

  • Done all this, locate the various directives that can affect the removable drive. It will appear that the capability is not allowed or write access is denied.
  • Look for the Disable option right there, then accept and you will have finished configuring.

6. Use a Linux-based distribution

This solution serves as a secondary method, since it consists of an SD card reader and a Linux branded live distributor. In order to access it, you should search the list of Linux distributions and choose the most used.

One of the most downloaded distributions is Ubuntu, better known as Live CD or GParted is also recommended. Then you need to add an application called Gnome Format which will run on your installed system.

The instructions are very simple.; Start by formatting where this option comes out and once this is done you will have managed to remove the write lock from the connected SD card or pen drive.

However, the lock may not be removed the first time, so you must access the advanced alternative. Once there, find where it says Create partition table and now you can run device formatting again.
